Basalt / Lava Stone

Basalt (lavastone, volcanic rock) is an fine-grained igneous rock formed from the rapid cooling of basaltic lava. The vesicular texture leads to an excellent insulating properties for both thermal protection and acoustic insulation. It is high in silicates, iron, and magnesium, usually grey to black in colour, but rapidly weathers to brown or rust-red due to the oxidation of its mafic (iron-rich) minerals into hematite and other iron oxides and hydroxides. Because of this, sealing is highly recommended when it is used as construction stone.

Basalt Dimension Stone

A stone sealing is highly recommended for any basalt applications. It does not only seals out water but also slows down staining or discoloration caused by weathering.

Linear Raked Tile

  • linear raked basalt cutting

Basalt tiles are being cut to the required dimensions of 60/80/100x15x2.5cm.

Grooved + Chiseled Tile

We use micropores black basalt to make this product too. We firstly prepare basalt tile which is cut a little bit larger than what is required by the architect. The basalt tile is equidistantly cut with grooves on the top by a sawing machine.

A stone master manually work on these basalt grooves. He chisels off the stone bit by bit until every parts along these grooves are done. Here is a reference video on this topic.

The last step is to trim the stone to the finally required dimension, for example 60x30x(2.2-2.5)cm.

Basically there will be some materials wasted in the manufacture process, but the final rock-faced effect really stands out. It's best especially for water features.

What is honeycomb like flaw?

  • honeycomb-like-flaw

    honeycomb-like flaw

When a Microhole / no-hole basalt block is cut, there is a chance that natural flaw will been there like the picture on the left. This is what we call a honeycomb-like flaw where unwanted small area of bigger holes appear in the slab.

This is natural flaw or blemish which we can cut off in small size tile production. But it's hard to deal when it comes to big size slabs, some small area of flaw like this might be.
